When Comfort Can't Wait: Elwood's Willington Story

The Customer Need

When Elwood's existing mini-split system failed during the summer, restoring comfort became an immediate priority. Replacement parts for the existing Panasonic system were expected to take approximately eight weeks, which meant a repair wasn't necessarily the best long-term answer.

As Elwood put it, "Losing a mini-split AC in July was frightening not to mention uncomfortable." A portable unit in the bedroom provided some temporary relief, but the real need was a dependable solution for the home. This became an opportunity to step back, understand the existing system and determine whether repairing it or replacing it would provide the better long-term outcome.

What We Did

Before recommending a solution, the Homestead Comfort team performed an on-site assessment of the existing system and installation. We documented the home with photos, reviewed the outdoor equipment and each of the three indoor comfort zones, and evaluated the existing electrical, line-set routing and other conditions that could affect the installation. That information helped us develop the installation plan and appropriate replacement options.

The assessment also helped identify portions of the existing installation that could continue to be used. The existing line-hide was relatively new and could be reused, along with the existing electrical circuit with an exterior GFI added. We also planned for the conditions at the outdoor equipment location, including mounting the new outdoor unit to accommodate the slope.

Elwood was presented with two three-zone ductless replacement options and ultimately selected a Mitsubishi Electric three-zone ductless heat pump system serving the family room, living room and bedroom.

Another important part of planning the project was looking beyond the equipment itself. Available Energize CT and NEHPA rebates were identified for the project, helping reduce the overall investment required for the new system. When available, programs like these can make an important difference in helping homeowners move forward with the solution that makes the most sense for their home.

The Expected Result

When asked what he expected from the project, Elwood's answer was simple: "Without a doubt, comfort."

And that's really where the story lands. The benefit isn't only replacing a failed piece of equipment. It's moving from an aging system with difficult-to-source replacement parts to a new solution planned around the home's actual needs. The expected result is dependable comfort in the rooms Elwood uses every day, along with the peace of mind that comes from knowing the project was evaluated and planned as a complete system.
